Plot
: Based on the film “Seven Brides
for Seven Brothers” – when will we start getting some original scripts out of
Bollywood? – this movie tells the story of seven brothers in search of seven
brides to grace their ramshackle home.
Released in 1982, this blockbuster stars
Amitabh Bachchan,
Shakti Kapoor,
Sachin and
Paintal as
the brothers (a cursory look at the cast will reveal that, in comparison to
Amitabh Bachchan, they are all non-entities and comedians); and
Hema Malini,
Sarika,
Ranjeeta and Kalpana Iyer among the ladies. No Hindi film would be complete
without its full quota of villains (why do they spoil all the fun?), and Satte
Pe Satta has some big names in
Amjad Khan
and
Mac Mohan.Being
the eldest member of his extended clan, it is Amitabh Bachchan’s good fortune to
fall in love (with dream girl Hema Malini) and tie the knot in marriage.
Thankfully, Hema Malini has a civilizing effect on his ruffian brothers – none
more so than Shakti Kapoor – and (feminism being unknown in those days) as a
dutiful sister-in-law decides that the best thing for them all would be to get
them married. The girls are willing, and matters could have been amicably
settled by half-time, if Amjad Khan (once again) had not played the villain and
extended the movie by another hour and a half.Things take a turn for the worse
when Amitabh Bachchan is kidnapped and replaced by his double – a gangster by
the name of Babu. How many Amitabh Bachchan look alikes are roaming the streets,
anyway? No matter, that is what brothers are for, and Amitabh Bachchan has a
full complement of them. They come to his rescue, and Amjad Khan meets his
comeuppance, but not before there is a ferocious free for all – and Amitabh
Bachchan confronts his alter ego in one of Bollywood’s favorite stunts.Marriage
is one of Bollywood’s (and Indian society’s) favorite obsessions – and the
worship of idols (whether cricketing, film or political idols) is the other. It
is no great surprise therefore that when these two obsessions come together on
the same platform, a surefire success is guaranteed. That said, the movie has
plenty of lighter / comedy moments as well. The movie is somewhat typical of the
kind of movies that were being produced in that period (in the early eighties)
when Amitabh Bachchan was at his heyday. More often than not, it was the star
himself who was the vehicle, and the movie was simply built around him. |
