Plot
:Aparna Sen’s ‘15 Park Avenue’ is a film with a sensitive subject. It is a film
that will appeal to selected audience. It may not appeal to masses.
'15 Park Avenue' tells the story of Mithali (Konkana Sen) and her elder sister
Anjali (Shabana Azmi). Mithi suffers from schizophrenia. She lives in an
imaginary world. A part of her imaginary world is her husband Jojo and her
children who live at 15 Park Avenue. She will search for the address, but cannot
find it.
In the past, Mithi was a vibrant girl and worked as a journalist. She was
engaged to Joydeep Roy (Rahul Bose), whom she lovingly called 'Jojo'. During one
of her reporting assignments, when she went out of Kolkata, she was gang-raped
by number of goons. Since then, she became a target to schizophrenia. Her mental
condition is so severe that even Joydeep leaves her off. she cannot be removed
from her imagination. It looks so difficult to get her to the reality.
Though Anjali is married, she comes more often to look after her sick sister
Mithi and her mother (Waheeda Rehman). She gets divorced from her husband and
takes care of them. Mithi, Anjali and their mother will once go to Bhutan. There
they happen to meet Joydeep, who is now married and has children. Joydeep gets
shocked looking at Mithi's condition. He gets some pity upon her and decides to
help her in finding the address '15 Park Avenue'. This marks the end, making
viewers think what is real and what is imaginary. The conclusion leaves many
things open for viewer interpretation.
Performance:
Konkana Sen suits well for the character of a woman who suffers from
schizophrenia. Shabana Azmi's role is good. She suits well as elder sister.
Rahul Bose and Waheeda Rehman did their part adequately. Aparna Sen, being an
actor, choosen a good cast that suit well to her script. She has moulded her
script into a slow paced flick which attracts only some selected audience. The
film has no songs testing the viewer's patience. |
